Mathlete Show – Graphing The World Cup

Filed Under (Math) by on June 20, 2010 and tagged ,

Mr. Salsich’s class has caught “World Cup Fever.” We have been reading about the event, following the results online, and using graphs to compare the different teams.

Here is another episode of “The Mathlete Show” all about graphs and the World Cup. The hosts for this episode are Pele, Mia Hamm, Pirlo, and Ronaldo. (This is our last Mathlete Show of the year.)

Who do you want to win The World Cup?

Do you have any questions about the graphs, or about The World Cup?

I’m very impressed with this post! We call it soccer in New Zealand as well but some people are starting to change and call it football. We are very proud of our New Zealand, the All Whites, team who drew with Italy earlier today. Please check out our class blog if you get a chance.

      Year 7 and 8 Blog,

Thanks for the comment. I have checked out your blog and really enjoyed the variety of posts.

Congratulations to “the All Whites” and to all of New Zealand! I watched the whole game and it was very exciting. The last 30 minutes were intense, as Italy was attacking ferociously. But The All Whites held them off and even had an attack or two of their own. What a great result!

Best of luck against Paraguay. I’ll be watching and cheering for New Zealand. (We have a big game of our own this Wednesday against Algeria.)

      Hi Cedar,

Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you liked the video.
To answer your question, we didn’t put South Africa in any of the graphs because they have never won the World Cup and most experts didn’t give them a good chance of winning this year. It would have been fun to graph all of the 32 countries, but we decided to just graph the ones that had already won a championship, or had a high probability of winning this one.

Are you cheering for a particular country?

    Dear Mr. Salsich,
Yes I did watch the US Algeria game. The thing about USA right know is that they got eliminated, Ghana beat USA 2 to 1. Well hopefully 4 years will go by quick and next thing you know, 2014 fifa World cup! Right now I’m rooting for Portugal and Argentina. Who are you rooting for?

    Your student,
    Sean

      Dear Sean,

Yes, it’s a bummer that the USA aren’t in the World Cup any more, but I think they are getting better each year. Who knows, maybe they can win it all in 2014!
Now I’m actually rooting for Ghana because they are the last African country in the Cup. For the semifinals I hope it is Ghana against Brazil and Spain against Argentina.
Who will you cheer for if Argentina plays Portugal?
