We Tried Vegemite!

Filed Under (Collaboration, Social Studies) by on 28-11-2011 and tagged

We tried vegemite in class the other day. Vegemite is a popular spread in Australia, where our blogging buddies 2KM & 2KJ live. It is made from yeast extract, spices, and salt.

a jar of vegemite

People also eat it in New Zealand, which is where our friends in B4 live. Our classmate Maura brought a jar back from her visit to New Zealand last month.

Our friends from “Down Under” (Australia) recommended that we only scrape a little bit on a piece of toast or a cracker. We used crackers. Here is a video of us trying vegemite for the first time!

Have you ever tried vegemite? What did you think?

What is a strange or unusual food that you’ve tried?

    Hello Mr Salsich’s class,

It looks like you had fun trying Vegemite. I’m was very pleased that you listened to what the Ozzie and NZ teachers suggested to Mr Salsich on Twitter about only using a little bit of Vegemite. We really don’t eat a lot at a time.

I have some interesting information for you.
    * Vegemite was originally made from the yeast left over from making beer.

    * Many years ago, Kraft who make Vegemite only had a K inside the diamond shape for their logo. It was my Uncle who made the new design that we see today.

    * We have 2 new ‘flavours’ of Vegemite in Australia now – Cheesymite which is Vegemite combined with cheese. You can buy it in a jar already mixed up
    - and Junior Vegemite for little children. I haven’t tried this product as yet. I assume it has less salt.

    * We can get Vegemite in tubes which are a little like toothpaste tubes only with a screw end. This is for people who like eating Vegemite while camping.

    * When I was a child, we could buy Vegemite in 5kg tins. That is a lot of Vegemite.

Have you discovered any other facts about Vegemite?

I am Australian, and I really like Vegemite on toast for breakfast -I am glad so many of you liked it too! You should try having some with a piece of cheese on top too.
Can you recommend any foods that you think I should taste?

    Dear Mr Salsich and class,

I had a big smile on my face when I watched you all try Vegemite.

This is one of my favourite spreads. Nearly every day I have some Cruskits (crackers) with peanut butter and Vegemite mixed together. Yum! When I was at school, my favourite sandwich filling was peanut butter with Vegemite or Vegemite with cheese.

I am not the only one who thinks Vegemite and cheese is a good combination. In Australia, you can also buy a spread called Cheesybite. It is a Vegemite/cream cheese mix.

If you thought Vegemite was too salty, you might like My First Vegemite. This is a new product in Australia for young children.

If you are interested in finding out more about Vegemite, this is a good website http://www.kraftbrands.com/kraftvegemite

Can you believe this spread has been enjoyed in Australia for nearly 90 years?

What is the most popular spread in the USA?

PS – how did you like the Tim Tams and the Weet-bix?

      I really liked the Vegemite.

That’s a great video with a special New Zealand and Australia delicacy! I love the voice overs from your students talking about it afterwards, it was great and I loved the facial expressions too!

    Hi Everyone,

I really enjoyed watching your video about eating vegemite. You all had the best reaction I have ever seen! It has got a rather unusual flavour. My favourite way of eating it is on hot toast with lots of butter!

The most unusual thing I have ever tried is baby octopuses. I don’t think I’ll eat them again! They were a bit daunting. My husband has tried kangaroo. He liked eating that.

    Thanks for showing for video

Hi all! As someone who has lots of Vegemite for breakfast every morning, and sometimes for lunch AND tea as well, I found your video quite amusing!

Nice to see kids on the other side of the world trying one of favourite foods!

    Dear Class,

It seemed as if most of the students enjoyed the Vegemite! We had a fun time in New Zealand picking out various snack food to bring home. Did you also try the Marmite, Weet-bix and TimTams?

My friends who live in New Zealand do not eat much processed food. Snacks for them, and for us during the week we were there, were mostly dried fruits, granola and nuts.

Did Maura tell you how she and her brother gathered eggs every morning from the hen house? They were so yummy!

    Regards,
    Tysen (Maura’s Mom)

The vegemite video was a really funny video, especially the part when Luke ate the snack and said “I made it magically disappear.”

I have tried Vegemite. I think it’s really good. 1 of the weird foods I’ve eaten was cheesy hot dogs with chips and sprinkles. I thought it was good.
What other weird foods have you tried?

      @ Anthony,

      I am from Mrs.Yollis’s class.

We have tried Vegemite. In my opinion it was extremely salty, but very good (I bet you would like it to)

      I have some questions:

      * Have you tried other strange foods?

      * If so did you like the new food?

      * Where did you get the food?

I think it is interesting to learn about other countries and their customs.

There is a great dispute between the Marmite lovers of England and the Vegemite lovers down south. Essentially we love to like our own. I was very surprised that nearly all the children liked vegemite. In England people either love or loathe marmite. It is stronger than vegimite..me I’m a lover.
Do you have any particular foods that are unique to your area? I was in New York and I liked the tubes of crystals that can be sprinkled into bottles of water.

    Your blog remains a delight.

What do you guys generally have for breakfast on your toast?

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

I tried Vegemite in my class also. I sort of liked Vegemite, but it wasn’t my favorite. It was a little strange for me. When I was in Colorado last year, I tried a buffalo burger for the first time. It tasted sort of like beef, but with more flavor. I really like to eat buffalo burgers and my dad barbecues them for me sometimes.

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

My name is Alexandra and I am from Mrs. Yollis’ class. We also tried Vegemite and some people liked it and some people didn’t. I thought that it was going to taste like peanut butter, but it tasted like salty chocolate to me. I am glad that I had the experience of tasting Vegemite, because I love to try new things, especially food.

Did you try Vegemite, if so did you like it?

    Warmly,
