Third Grade Explorations in Learning
Every March Mr. Salsich’s class has a poetry tournament called “Poetry Madness.”
The tournament is starting next week, and each week we will have four different poems that you can listen to and then vote for your favorite.

We have had a lot of fun reading poems in class! Poetry can be very entertaining, just check out this short video of some of us reading the poem “No” by Shel Silverstein:

Hi Mr Salsich’s Class,
Seeing you guys read Shel Silverstein reminded me how much I like him… especially Whatif, that’s my favourite!
In a Room with a View, we try to read a poem a day… it doesn’t take long, we listen and then say what our mental picture was – it’s amazing how we can all ‘see’ different things!
At the moment we’re practicing for our local Tournament of Song, where some of us will get up on stage and recite our poems – SCARY! Have you ever recited a poem from memory? Did you find it hard to learn?

Dear Mr Salsich and class
We are so looking forward to the poetry tournament starting. We learned some wonderful poems through last year’s tournament and we even used some of them for our weekly poems.
We like a variety of poems in our class. Some have catchy rhythms, and some have great word choices. We think poetry is wonderful!

Mrs M comments so quickly! She’s my friend from a near by school in England. I loved your poetry madness event last year, but we’d only just started to blog. I have been looking for a mini project for a group of 6-7 year olds that I teach for just an hour a week … I hope you guys don’t mind if I steal your idea? I love Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein, so now you kids have encouraged me to put my hand in my wallet and buy some material. If you haven’t read any Michael Rosen, you should, try ‘Quick let’s get out of here!’ . You can access ‘Chocolate Cake’, my wife’s favourite children’s poem, on line.
I am really looking forward to hearing your readings and it was very hard to decide how to cast my vote last time.

Dear Mr. Salsich and class,
I’m really looking forward to Poetry Madness! I loved hearing all of the different poems read last year and being able to vote for my favorite.
Unfortunately, my favorite didn’t win last year but hopefully it will this year. I’ll just have to be sure to vote every time!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery

I love your post Poetry Madness is Coming… I thought it was great! Because I love reading and writing POEMS! And I have the book Falling Up isn’t that the book you read out of? I ask that because I have the book Falling Up and I recognize that poem.
Sincerely,
Holly, 3rd Grader

I love hearing the kids read the lines, especially when they get to laughing so hard they have to stop. It happens to me reading Shel’s perfectly crafted poems! Can’t wait to see the final results.

I read your post Poetry Madness. I thought since you would recommend it, maybe I would try it myself. I also really enjoyed your post.
I really can’t wait till next week to hear more about Poetry Madness!
Sincerely,
