Mathlete Show – Comparing Quarterbacks

Filed Under (Math) by on January 11, 2013 and tagged ,

In math we have been learning how to compare large numbers and find the difference between them. This is helpful when comparing statistics or data. It can also be used when subtracting large numbers.

We decided to make a new ‘Mathlete Show” video to share what we have been learning. In this video we will compare two of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, to see who had the better season.

*

Brady vs. Manning!

*

Here is the video, starring “Nugget”, “Purple Piggy”, and “Bubble”:

*

Who do you think is the best quarterback in the NFL?

Tom Brady passed for a total of 4,827 yards and Peyton Manning passed for a total of 4,659 yards. How many more yards did Tom Brady pass for? How did you figure it out?

What did you think of the video?

    Hello Mr.Salsich’s class,

My name is Daisy and I’m from Mr.Miller’s 7th grade AVID class. First of I love your blog theme it’s so neat. I think the best quarterback is Alex Smith from the 49ers. I’m a fan of the 49ers. Tom Brady past 168 yards more than Peyton Manning. I figure that out by subtracting and I like the video you guys made. Well bye!!

Hi, my name is Uriel from Mr. Miller’s class in California. I think Tom Brady is good because he led his team to three super bowls. Tom Brady passed 168 more yards than Peyton Manning. I figured it out by subtracting. Well bye. I hope you can visit my blog at http://mrmillersstudent202.edublogs.org/

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

Hi, this is Rhys, Wynn’s older brother. I’m in 5th grade. I am a HUGE Patriots fan, and I think Tom Brady is better because he’s led the Pats to 3 Super Bowls and Peyton Manning led the Colts to one. But, Manning has a good chance to lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl. Manning and Brady are both elite, but I think Aaron Rodgers is up there too.

      Dear Rhys,

I agree Aaron Rodgers is really good but now my arch-enemies are the San Francisco 49ers because they defeated the Green Bay Packers. Oh and LETS GO RAVENS!

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

I think Eli Manning is a better quarterback than Peyton Manning and Tom Brady because unlike Peyton, Eli would have beat Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens. And also, Eli is better than Tom Brady because Eli has beat him two times in the super bowl – once last year and the year that they won every single game and then they lost to the wild cards, that was a good year.

Dear Purple Piggy, Nugget, and Bubble,

I think the answer to the problem is 168. I got this by making a number line. I started at 4,659 and ended with 4,827 then I jumped by 168 (which was my answer.)

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

I think the best quarterback in NFL is Eli Manning from the New York Giants.

Tom Brady has passed 168 more yards than Peyton Manning passed for this season.

One thing I like from the video is the bloopers.

    Sincerely,
    Purple Piggy

P.S. Nugget, everyone knows that scissors cuts rock.

I used a number line. I started at 4,659 and jumped up to 4,827. The difference was 168.

I think the best QB in the NFL is Ben Rothlesburger Because Ben Rothlesburger passed for 3,265 yards. (Also because I like the Steelers!)

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

I think currently Tom Brady is the best QB, because the Giants who have Eli, didn’t make it into the playoffs and the Patriots who have Brady, already made it to the last AFC playoff game.

The answer to the math question is 168. I figured this out by using a number line. I jumped 1, then 40, then 100, then 27, and eventually reached 4,827. I added the jumps and it was 168.

    Dear Mr.Salsich,

My favorite part of the mathlete show was the bloopers when Nugget was late and then said “Welcome to the mathlete show.” And Purple Piggy said “Your late.” I think Bubble was as speedy as a cheetah with his math.

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

I really liked the Mathlete show especially the bloopers. It was funny when Purple Piggy and Nugget were doing rock, paper, scissors and when Nugget ran into his chair and said “welcome to the Mathlete show” and Purple Piggy said ” your late”.

I think the answer to 4,659 + _____ = 4,827 is 168. I used a number line and started at 4,659 and ended at 4,827. I jumped by 1 to get to 4,660. Then I jumped by 40 to get to 4,700 and then i did a jump of 100 to get to 4,800 and finally a jump of 27 to get to 4,827.

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

I think that Tom Brady is way better than any other quarterback in the NFL. I think that because this year I was watching tv and it said that Tom Brady and the Pats are the best team in the NFL, and that is my proof that Tom Brady and the Pats are the best team in the NFL.

    Dear Nugget,

I think the best quarterback in the NFL (National Football League) ”skill-wise” is Tom Brady. But I think the best quarterback ”team-wise” is Ben Rothlisberger. I think this because Tom Brady threw a pass for 83 yards! I wonder how many feet that is? Anywho, I think Ben Rothisberger is the best ”team-wise” because I like the Steelers.

    Sean

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

I think that Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL because Brady led the Patriots to three super bowls and for this season he has already brought the Patriots to the semi-finals.

Tom Brady passed 168 yards more than Payton Manning. I used a number line starting on 4,659 and and ended on 4,827. First, I jumped by 1 to get to 4,660 and second, I jumped by 40 to get to 4,700. After that I jumped by 100 to get to 4,800. Next, I jumped 20 to get to 4,820. Finally, I jumped 7 to get to 4,827. I added them up (the ones first) 1+7=8. Then I added the hundreds and tens 100+40+20=160. 160+8=168.

    Who is your favorite quarterback?

    Sincerely,
    Ivy

    Mr. Salsich,

We don’t really get the NFL in New Zealand, we get the Superbowl and some of the games on pay TV but its not a huge deal for most of the country here, so I couldn’t really say if Peyton Manning or Tom Brady was better. I would have used the jumping method to solve the equation.
I loved the video and the presentation and the fact that you put the Maths aspect into aspect. Brilliant.
