“Snow Days” – The Blizzard of 2013

Filed Under (General, Writing) by on February 15, 2013 and tagged ,

We had a HUGE snow storm last weekend! Our town got about 21 inches (53 centimeters) of snow. In fact, because we got so much snow and the winds were over 35 miles per hour, the storm was categorized as a blizzard!

Almost two feet of snow!

Since the roads were so slippery and a lot of places lost power because of the winds, we had snow days (no school!) on Friday and Monday and a delayed opening on Tuesday.

Slippery Roads

Snow days are one of the most exciting things about winter in Connecticut. The students (and teachers!) get a surprise day off.

In this post we are going to share some of our thoughts and experiences from the blizzard.

Deep snow!

*

During and after the blizzard we took pictures of what it looked like at our homes. Then, when we finally got back to school we talked about our experiences and wrote some descriptive paragraphs about the blizzard.

Here is a slide show with our writing and pictures from our snow day, blizzard experiences:

Does it snow a lot where you live?

What did you think of our writing and our pictures?

What is your favorite winter activity?

    Dear Mr.Salsich,

My favorite winter activity is sledding! I like sitting in my purple toboggan and launching myself down the hill. This storm was not good for sledding because the snow was so thick I would just have to push myself all the way down the hill.

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

I liked the pictures on the post about the 2013 blizzard. I really liked the picture when Nugget’s basketball got stuck in the hoop. I also liked the picture of Sandy’s yard when the blizzard started and when it stopped.

    Dear Mr.Salsich,

What I like to do in the snow is throw snowballs at my brother when he comes out. Until he can’t stand it or until he falls down in the snow and I bury him.

Wow. I’ve never seen that much snow. I’ve never even seen snow! It’s nearly 100 degrees here today. I live in Melbourne in Australia. I’m going to show my grade 3 and 4 students your blog on Monday. Maybe we can pal up when they get their blog going. We have only been back at school for two weeks since our summer break.

    Good luck with the cold!

We dont get snow here in New Zealand. I have been to Mt. Ruapahu to see the snow but I couldnt see very well cause it was snowing at the time. But I had a great time! How deep was the deepest snow you have been in in your country or anywhere else?

Dear Mr Salsich and Grade 3
We were amazed to read that there was 53 cm of snow! We got out our metre ruler and measured it against ourselves. On most of us it reached the top of our thighs.

here are some comments from B4 children:

Toby – We only get snow in winter (it is summer now). My favourite game is to hide in the snow.

Caleb – I make snowmen. it is fun. I lie in the snow. I make a snow angel.

Lachy – Me and dad and Diven had to have a really big clean up. We had a big snowball fight and made a really big snowman.

Billy – The last time it snowed I got my sled then I made a mountain.

Nathan – My favourite activity in the snow is on the skiis and making a snow angel. Is it still snowy in your country? I bet it is.

Tarris – Last year when it snowed I made a snowman. I called it Tarris No. 2. I think it looked like a monster.

Mason – Last year when it snowed I went to my Pop’s house. I got my toboggan out. In a hurry I raced to the steep hill. It was covered in snow. Ouch! I crashed in to a tree.

Bradley – It is fun to make snow angels.

Ricci – Is it fun where you are? I want to come down. I want to throw snowballs.

Zaria – My favourite winter activity is the sled. One day at my friend’s house on the farm we went on the sled. My friend hopped on. Then she went …. CRASH.

Jamie – No it is not snowing here. It is sunny but when it is snowing I make snow angels.

Ivy – One day when it snowed I made a snow angel. It was very big and deep. Me and my mum made a snow man. We put a hat, a carrot for the nose, lollies for the eyes, and buttons for the mouth.

Jia Xuan – My favourite thing to do in winter is to make snowmen and to go sledding. Last year I made a snow cat and lots of snow angels!

Emily – In Reefton we don’t get much snow here. I love playing in snow. I like doing roly-polys and making snowmen.

Skye – I make snow angels in the snow. I make snowmen in the snow.

Liv – My favourite winter activity is to write in my diaries.

We wonder if you will get more snow before spring!

warm wishes Mrs McKenzie and B4 in New Zealand

Can’t believe it, and from a country that it dosen’t snow in, it has snowed twice in the last one hundred years (and once was last year for ten seconds) its amazing to see such snow. Like Mrs Mackenzie did with her class I will show it to my class tomorrow, only half of them have ever seen snow and its amazing. They will love it.

    Dear Mr. Salsich’s Class,

We had some snow and I built a snowman. I liked Sandy’s descriptive narrative. When you said “boom” I could imagine a loud boom and then you looked outside to see a tree had fallen. Your words helped me build a picture. It would be so much fun to play in all that snow. Did any of your class build a snowman?

    Dear Mr. Salsich,

It snows a fair amount here in Michigan. We don’t get nearly as much snow as you did. I really enjoy basketball season in the winter, but my favorite outdoor activity is snow ball fights.

    Dear Mr. Salsich and Class,

Wow, 21 inches of snow! I live in Michigan so we don’t always get a lot of snow, but this year we only got about 10 inches of snow. Ten inches ins’t nearly as much as 21 inches! I think I liked it better last year when it felt like spring in the winter, and we didn’t really get that much snow. How cold did it get? Did the teperature drop that much?

Your blog is really cool! Hope to get a reply from you! Have fun in the snow!

    Dear Mrs. Salsich,

21 inches of snow is crazy! I would love to get that much snow because I love playing outside. I live in Michigan so we only got a little snow and I can’t remember if we ever had 21 inches of snow! I hope you all had fun on your snow days and I hope to see more posts soon.

    Dear Mr. Salsich’s class,

Your pictures are stunning! I love to look at the undisturbed snow. I agree with Collin. It always glistens like glitter in the sunlight. There’s just something about freshly fallen snow mounded up high on each individual tree branch that looks so beautiful to me!

It has been a long time since we’ve gotten that much snow. I remember tunneling through and making snow forts. You certainly had enough there to make a whole network of tunnels!

Cayla, I’m concerned! Your descriptive language helped me to understand how you felt. I imagine that being bitten by a thousand tiny lions would be horrible! I’d like to recommend sledding somewhere else next time. ;)

You’ve all done a wonderful job with your writing! Keep up the great work!
