Our Blog

Our blog is a journal of what we are learning in class.  It’s also a place for students to express themselves.  We’ll also use it to share what we have created – writing, art, science experiments, music, etc.

*

Our blog is also to help us connect to other students around the world. We love to exchange ideas with blogging buddies who also have a class blog.

  1. As a teacher who has used a blog to communicate what goes on in my classroom, I am very inspired by your blog because your students are communicating directly to their audience about their learning. What an excellent example the wiki on the Pequots is. I really loved the different ways the children’s lessons were shown. Thank you so much for this. We are studying woodland Indians and I will be sharing your wiki with my class.

  2. I have only been blogging with my students since the end of January and love looking at other class blogs. You have so many great ideas! I hope you won’t mind if I try to borrow some of your organizational ideas for our class blog.

  3. I just started blogging and I love it! Your blog is great and I will add it to the “blogs we like” links. I know that my 3rd graders will enjoy looking at your blog when school starts back up in August.

  5. G’day Mr Salsich and class,
Thanks for joining the September 2010 blogging challenge. I hope you enjoy the activities and if you have any suggestions for what a challenge could be, please leave a comment on the challenge blog.

  6. What a fantastic blog Mr. Salsich’s class. I love your use of video and slideshows. You have a lot of great ideas and learning to share. Well Done :)

  7. Dear Mr. Salsich’s Class,

We are very excited to learn about your class! We are learning about how to make new friends through blogging. This is a list of questions that our 4th graders have for your students.

If you took a vote, what would your students’ favorite subjects be?
What are some of the activities your students like to do after school?
Do you like to listen to music? What kinds?
What are some of your favorite games to play in school?

Mrs. Moore is our Technology teacher. She is the one who teaches us about blogging and uses Techie Kids. Do you have a special Technology class?

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

  8. Hello Mr. Salsish and Class,

I discovered your blog last spring while looking for some inspiration for my own class blog. I really love all of your entries! The student work is exceptional. Way to go, third graders!

I am also a third grade teacher and my class loves to read your blog entries. We are just getting started with our blog, I hope you’ll take a look. Could you give us an idea about how to best embed videos we make? We have several that we would like to upload, but they seem too large.

Looking forward to hearing about your next learning adventure!

  9. Dear Mr. Salsich,

Could I bring in my mini cactus for “In The Desert” project? And are we going to do the “Kite Project”?

If I could bring in my cactus that would be great. ;D

    Your Super Student,
    Tommy

    • Dear Tommy,

It would be great to have your mini cactus for our desert project! It is going to be a lot of fun trying to make a giant saguaro in our room. It will also be a challenge, but I’m sure we can figure out how to do it.

I’m not sure if we are going to do the kite project in the spring. If not, we will do something just as interesting.

      From,
      Mr. Salsich

  10. Dear Mr. Salsich,

I think we should each do a report about a different state in the United Sates. like Mississippi or Ohio and stuff like that.

    from,
    Hope

    • Dear Hope,

That is a fantastic idea, but I know that is something that you will learn a lot about next year in fourth grade. Of course, you could start learning on your own this year and I could help out.

      From,
      Mr. Salsich

    • Dear Hope,
It seems that there are people from different states who read your blog. Perhaps you could come up with a few questions you have about other states and readers could answer them. I am from NY state and would be happy to answer questions about it, or even have some third graders that I work with answer them. Also, when I was younger we had pen pals, maybe these days you could have email pals from a third grade in another state. That would be fun! Just some ideas. Your teacher would of course be the one to get approval from and help set things up. I like that you are wanting to learn more though! Stay inquisitive.
      Sincerely,
      Miss Schroeder

  11. Hi,
Our class loves reading your blog and reading the wonderful writing you are doing in your class. We are also learning about writing with “show me” details in our writing time during the Daily 5. We have a question for you about your blog…How did you add the “blogs we follow” widget to your sidebar? We would like to do that on our class blog too, but can not seem to figure it out. Can you please help us out?

    Much appreciated,
Mrs. Webb-Scheers and the students of 4WS

  12. Dear Mr. Salsich,

You must like animals a lot to be having them all over the room. What is your favorite one?

    From your supreme student,
    Hope.

    • Dear Hope,

Yes, I definitely love animals! I hope the classroom doesn’t feel too much like the outdoors with all the animals around. It is too hard for me to pick a favorite animal, but some of my favorites are snow leopards, hippos, tree frogs, and nighthawks.

Do you have a favorite animal?

      From,
      Mr. Salsich

      • Dear Mr. Salsich,

My favorite animals are sharks, pigs, roosters, opossum, jellyfish, stingrays, dingos, all snakes, kangaroo rats, hippos and rhinos. I think all animals are cool!

        From, Hope

  13. Dear Mr. Salsich,

I think it would be interesting if we learned about rocks and minerials in class. I would also like to learn about famous people in history. I know we did that last year, but doing it was so much fun and I would like to do it again.

    From,
    Margot*

    • Dear Margot,

We are going to learn about rocks and minerals in the spring. It is a very fun unit. Mr. DeWire from Naturescapes will come in to show us different local rocks and minerals.

We don’t have a unit on biographies and famous people, but you can do a special project about a famous person if you would like during reading. let me know, and I can help you get started if you want.

      From,
      Mr. Salsich

  14. Dear Mr. Salsich,

Are we going to have a post about our desert project? I think we should make a video or a voice thread because we have worked very hard on the project. The lines we are using for the tape could be recorded.

    From,
    Margot*

  15. Mr. Salsich and class,
Students at Star of the Sea School in Virginia Beach, VA enjoyed looking at your blog today. Your class has done a fantastic job! We are constructing our own blog. May we add yours to our blogroll as a great example to follow?
    Joanne Selig

    • Dear Ms. Selig,

Thank you for the kind comment. Of course you may add us to your blogroll! Please send us a link to your blog so we can return the favor and leave some comments.

      Happy blogging :)

      From,
      Mr. Salsich

  16. Dear Mr. Salsich,

I think we should do more of the research about the animals we studied earlier in the year like the videos and voicethreads that Emmett, me, Maggie and Amanda made in December and November. Maybe the people who have finished their projects could research another animal or work more on their Native American projects.

    from,
    Margot

    • Dear Margot,

I think that is a wonderful idea! We haven’t done any student voicethreads in a while. I’m going to try to really make time for the Native American projects this week and next week. It has been a little hard to work on science and social studies recently because of all the snow days, and it looks like we might have another one on Thursday! But we will fit the projects in, because working on your own research is one of the best things about school.

      From,
      Mr. Salsich

      • Dear Mr. Salsich,

When are you going to put up posts about the voice thread Taylor and I have been working on? I think if you do not put up that post soon you should put up the Juan Pablo post or the array post. I think if you want to wait a while that will be OK but I think people might get a little bored with the Mystery Project Showed post in a few days on Monday or Sunday.

  17. Dear Mr Salsich’s class,

I looked at your class blog today for quite a while, looking at lots of different videos and thinking about what you study, and how you study it. I especially like the science experiments. It’s really fun to see, and it seems like you all have a great time too. :)

The other reason I like your blog is because to make my living, I am a web designer, and in our job, we try hard to make our web sites “sticky”- and your blog is very sticky… it’s great!

Sticky means really interesting, so that people get stuck to it, because they keep reading all the different parts!

Keep up the good work everyone, and I’ll keep reading!

  19. I am a graduate student studying teaching at a university in Minneapolis, MN. I am in a technology in education class right now, and we were assigned to look through some student blog sites. I picked yours to look at because I grew up on CT, not too far from Stonington. I went to high school in New London, CT. Your blog site is really nice; very colorful, informative and interesting. Good work. Happy Summer!!

  20. I love your blog! I am a 4th grade teacher in Mt. Pleasant, SC and I’m planning to start my very first class blog this school year. Would it be ok with you if I used your blog as a model for students? I’m hoping to make my blog a place for parents and students to interact about what we do at school all day.

    Great site!

  21. Dear Mr. Salsich,

The Classroom Connection heads back to school for our first day Sept. 6th. I am very excited to start blogging with a new group of students. Hopefully we will get a chance to collaborate with you and your class on a project together this year. Maybe we could set up a Quad Blog once my students get the hang of blogging and learn about leaving good quality comments…the possibilities are endless!

I am glad to hear that you are doing the Daily 5 this year with your class. You will LOVE it. My favorite part (beside giving the kids choice) was the conferring/scheduling binder(the pensive). I found it made me more accountable to getting in all of my student conferences each day and it really helped with making sure we were focued each time I met with a child. Good luck with the process!

    Your Blogging Buddy,

    Mrs. Webb-Scheers
